How to Make a Thanksgiving Floral Arrangement

The easiest way to dress up any table setting is through a beautiful floral arrangement. I have become a pro at getting a florist-looking arrangement using grocery store flowers.

I can’t tell you how many times I find grocery flower arrangements that have a few high-end looking flowers in them. So, when I plan a gathering I search grocery stores (my favorite place to look is Trader Joe’s) and look for two pre-created arrangements, which usually ends up costing around $24.

Because I won’t be using the filler flowers in the mix, I try to find bulky pieces like hydrangeas or magnolia leaves so that I can add some volume to my arrangement. I also add in dainty accents (like berries) that serve as an additional pop of color or something that will add interest to the arrangement.

Once you’ve made it home with your two arrangements, my first suggestion is to lay out all of the flowers and group them according to type so you have a ‘workstation’ to go off of. Then, pick the vessel that you want to use. For this arrangement, I used two medium-sized vases.

My next tip is to always start with the framework. I like to frame around the bulkiest items (like hydrangeas) and place them where they are covering all of the sides. From there, add in some more of your bulky flowers, like a wide mouth rose or bloomed out flowers.

Once the arrangement looks relatively full, start to add in the dainty accents to some of the smaller ‘holes’. These accents could be berries, baby’s breath, budded flowers, etc.

Tip: Don’t take it so seriously, flower arranging should be fun! If you don’t like how it is looking, move things around. Every so often take a step back and look at the arrangement and think of where things need to be added or taken away. It can also help to grab a photo from Pinterest for inspiration and use that as your guide.

I like to look at an arrangement from one side rather than multiple sides. I add height in the back and then place the more exciting flowers in the middle and front of the arrangement, giving them the credit that they deserve.

Because I created Thanksgiving arrangments, I wanted them to feel relatively rustic, which is why I selected the colors that I did, and I finished them with a deer antler ornament that I had from Christmas past.

My finishing tip is to get creative with what you can incorporate into the arrangement! It’s always fun to make a flower arrangement interesting and fun by using other unexpected items. In my case, I could have added a pine cone by gluing it onto a kabob stick or used feathers to add some more texture and height.

Creating your own floral arrangement allows you to design exactly what you envision for a great, low price. It’s a fun and creative process that will result in the perfect table centerpiece for your Thanksgiving celebrations!
